After the previous first edition was sold over one year, the new edition comes with usability improvement and new functions. You can use MyGeiger as portable device for everyday pocket radiation monitoring or as stationary log station.
The new kit has carefully crafted electrical circuit with redesigned high voltage section, new power section, high quality LCD with shield PCB, built-in USB connectivity and lithium charger. The kit has low power consumption and wide compatibility with more popular 400V and 500V Geiger tubes.
MyGeiger ver.2.00 has amazing stability under high radiation load. With SBM-20 tube it can measure nuclear radiation intensity from 0.01uSv/h up to 1000 uSv/h. The dose value on display can be presented in Sievert or Roentgen units. You can switch the units any time you want.
Built-in logging option allows you to log CPM radiation data directly to your computer with our freeware software Radiation Logger for PC. If you test small radioactive samples then you can select Bq/cm2 logging mode in calibration menu.
5 minutes history CPM graph on LCD is auto adjusted and auto scrolling. The graph updated every five seconds and has nice flow on the screen.
Even all components for DIY soldering are DIP through hole, this kit is not recommended for novice because you have to recognize components polarity and orientation and you have to read user manual and understand electrical circuit principles. To make kit assembling and soldering you are required to have all soldering tools available, such a solder station, flux, solder wick, lead solder and flux remover. As before, you can order assembling service for additional cost.
As you probably know, every Geiger tube may have 10%-20% CPM error tolerance. MyGeiger has calibration menu where user can adjust tube conversion factor and eliminate GM tube error influence for displayed dose. The factor can be adjusted between 0.0001 to 0.0250 when default value for SBM-20 is 0.0057. The important note that is only SBM-20 tube is guaranteed to be installed into PCB clips, other tubes will require wire connection.
Because the project developed mostly for DIY, you'll need to find a proper enclosure for your counter and supply 3.7V Lithium battery. It’s possible to connect the counter to Geiger Bot iPhone application or add additional alert LED.
SD Logger+ Add On:
If you need microSD card logging support, then you can upgrade LCD Shield with SD Logger+ addon. SD Logger+ will write to micro SD all data exactly as it comes from MyGeiger DIY Geiger Kit main board. Depend on MyGeiger UART output settings, the kit sends CPM value or Bq/cm2 results each 5 seconds.
Logger addon has open source code based on Arduino IDE compiler. Because most of the operating time Atmega328 enter idle sleep mode, the power consumption of whole MyGeiger kit is still stay low as before. SD Logger adds only 1.5mA-2.0mA to the total kit consumption. When serial data is transferred from the main PIC18F2550 uProcessor to the USB output, Atmega328 enter active state for several micro seconds and writes same data to the SD card. If SD card is missing, or if you do not need SD log function, you can power down SD logger by removing LOG JMP jumper.
